How to Have the Best Online Dating Experience: Think like a Direct Marketer!

30 March 2009

I have been playing with social networking venues and joined my alumni groups on Linked In. I then posed this relationship question: What is the most challenging aspect of online dating? One brave gentleman gave me this response: “I spend lots of time communicating with women and it seems to be going great, and when I suggest we get together for coffee or something very low-key, they disappear and are never to be heard from again without even telling me why.”

I responded to him with this dating advice, “This is a common problem. It’s important to set up the right intention upfront. If that intention for a serious relationship scares the woman away- so be it. Your time is precious. If you are looking for a serious LT relationship – then say so. Also, set some limits about how long you will go back and forth. Don’t forget the telephone step before the meeting step. Good luck! Coach Amy”

First of all, just like online dating a direct marketer puts out his or her message, like a wide net, and sees what he catches! The marketer knows that the right message will attract likely prospects.

Next, it’s his (or her) job to qualify the prospect to ensure that it’s a right fit. What the marketer has to sell is what the customer really wants and needs. Timing is crucial. Think about the last big ticket item you wanted to buy.

  • Did the product or service measure up to expectations?
  • Did the picture of the product look as good as or better than the picture?
  • Did the product or the service meet your needs?
  • Are the features and benefits of value to you?
  • Did the timing work for you to buy this product?

There are so many reasons that a person would go all the way, take the time to converse back and forth and then, not take that final step!

My husband offered to buy me a PDA such as a Blackberry or an iPhone for my birthday. This would be a very personal relationship with an important piece of technology! I have been to several stores and talked to the salesmen on several occasions. I have researched the features and benefits online. I have talked to several people and asked their opinion. Well, my birthday was last January! I still haven’t made a decision. (Oh yes, I would have to give up my current cell phone which took me some time to master!)

The key is to stay diligent, focused, and determined. Many of my clients have been successful in finding their true love online as well as offline. What are you willing to do to find your serious love relationship?
