Do you ever feel like your dating life is all over the place? One moment you’re hopeful about a new connection, and the next you’ve been ghosted, or worse, stuck in a dead-end relationship. It’s so discouraging.
And if this happens repeatedly, the endless cycle leaves you feeling hopeless about your chances of ever finding real, lasting love. If this sounds familiar, my guess is you have probably stumbled into the chaotic loop of haphazard dating.
Haphazard dating is like trying to run a marathon with no experience, training, or plan, and expecting to come out a winner. You’ll end up tired, injured, and likely nowhere near the finish line. If you’re looking for a serious, long-term committed relationship, this random approach to dating just won’t cut it.
Instead, you need to embrace intentional dating—an approach that puts purpose and clarity at the forefront of your dating process.
What Is Intentional Dating?
Intentional dating is dating with purpose and a plan. It’s about knowing who you are, what you want in a partner and a relationship, and taking active steps to find it. You’re no longer going on dates just to fill time or because you’re lonely. Instead, you’re seeking someone who shares your relationship goals and core values. This shift in mindset makes all the difference between aimlessly dating and dating for lasting love.
Take Sally, for example. She thought going out with as many people as possible would increase her chances of finding the right one. And while that ‘quantity over quality’ approach of talking to as many people as possible might work if you’re trying to sell a car, it’s a poor approach to your love life. After months of disappointing dates, she came to my Motivated To Marry Group Coaching program.
Through coaching, she realized she had been wasting time on men who weren’t aligned with her long-term goals. She just wasn’t dating intentionally! We worked on clarifying her values and vision of what she wanted- a partner ready for a committed relationship—and adjusted her strategy. Instead of just accepting anyone who came along, she started to evaluate her prospects more intentionally. She learned to communicate her relationship intentions early and how to move on if he wasn’t on the same page. In time, Sally met someone who matched her goals and core relationship values, and now they are building a life together.
Too many singles fall into the trap of haphazard dating.
And most often it leads to confusion, unfulfilled expectations, and even heartbreak. When you don’t have a clear direction, it’s easy to:
- Go on dates without assessing true alignment.
Does the person share any of your values or goals? Do you enjoy anything that they are passionate about? Is there some attraction? - Waste time on the wrong people.
You might meet plenty of people, and have good chemistry, but are they really aligned with what you’re looking for long-term? - Feel burned out.
After months (or years) of aimless dating, you’re left emotionally exhausted, with nothing to show for it.
Sally’s story is a common one. She was dating plenty of people, but none of them were right for her. Why? Because she hadn’t taken the time to get clear on what she truly wanted and therefore wasn’t dating intentionally. She didn’t understand her core relationship values and non-negotiables. Like Sally, many people date haphazardly because they’re either afraid to be direct about their desires or they’ve bought into the myth that finding love should be easy. But if you’re serious about finding love, you need a clear and focused approach.
Shifting to intentional dating is taking on a more purposeful approach.
- Clarity About What You Want
When you’re intentional, you know exactly what you’re looking for. You’re not just focused on surface-level traits like looks or hobbies. Instead, you’re prioritizing values, character, and compatibility with your life goals. What does your ideal partner want from a relationship? Are they marriage-minded like you? Getting clear on these questions helps you attract the right people. - Mindful Dating Choices
Intentional dating is about being more choosey with potential partners. Instead of hoping someone fits into your vision, you’re actively assessing how they stack up from the start. Are they upfront about what they are looking for and is it a serious relationship, or are they still in casual-dating mode? With intentional dating, you learn to say “no” to those who don’t align with your relationship goals, even if you find them attractive, freeing up space for someone who will. - Stronger Communication
Haphazard dating leads to unspoken assumptions, causing confusion. With intentional dating, communication is front and center. You’re honest about your intentions early on and seek the same level of clarity from your partner. By openly discussing your long-term goals, you avoid mismatches that can lead to heartbreak down the road.
How to Transition to Intentional Dating
If you’ve been stuck in haphazard dating patterns, don’t worry—it’s not too late to make a change. Here are a few practical steps to help you move toward a more intentional dating approach:
- Get Clear on Your Non-Negotiables
What are the key qualities you’re looking for in a partner? These go beyond superficial traits like “must love hiking” and into deeper territory: shared values, life goals, and emotional compatibility. If marriage and a family are important to you, put that at the forefront of your dating criteria. - Build a Strategy
Intentional dating is about being proactive. Are you utilizing online dating and being clear in your profile about your values and intentions? Are you attending events or joining online communities designed for people with similar relationship goals? Are communicating with your trusted friends and family about your must-haves and asking for set-ups? Consider working with a relationship coach or joining a group coaching program to keep yourself accountable and sharpen your dating strategy. - Communicate Early and Often
You don’t need to announce your long-term plans on a first date but don’t shy away from being clear about your intentions. By the second or third date, it’s appropriate to ask where someone stands on commitment and long-term relationships. This helps weed out people who aren’t serious and saves you both from months of uncertainty or settling into an unsatisfactory relationship because you already invested too much time. This rarely ends well.
One of my client’s boyfriends announced on their first date that he intended to move to California. But that didn’t faze her. He was honest about his intentions and life goals and she found that they lined up nicely with her own. They are now engaged and living in California. - Reflect and Adjust
Even with a plan, dating is a journey. Take time to reflect on each prospect/date and relationship experience. Are you moving toward your goal, or do you need to adjust your approach? Learning from each interaction will help you to fine-tune your dating strategy.
If you desire marriage or a long-term commitment, dating without intention will land you back at square one over and over again.
You don’t deserve to be continually exhausted, disappointed, and still searching for a meaningful connection- it’s time for you to retake control of your love life. If you’re ready to stop letting your love life happen to you and start making it happen for you, it’s time to embrace intentional dating. Your future partner is out there, but they’re far more likely to find you when you’re purposeful and clear in your pursuit of lasting love.
