AI has found its way into American dating culture, and it’s here to stay. Though this probably isn’t a surprise to anyone.
Computer-based dating is now a 60+ year-old industry that began in the US in 1965, when Operation Match was launched on a room-sized IBM computer. In the 1990s, internet dating became a reality with Match.com creating the first subscription-based internet match-making service. And today, thanks to dating apps, you can find love in the palm of your hand.
However, in the time since OpenAI released ChatGPT to the general public in 2022, we’ve seen the fastest integration of a new technology ever. It’s everywhere. Still, public opinion of AI is split and very controversial.
A June 2026 Pew research study, Americans and AI 2026, revealed that the majority of Americans believe that AI is advancing too quickly, and 40% believe that AI will have a negative impact on society.
Yet in the same breath, 49% of Americans admit using AI Chatbots, and 60% say they read AI-generated summaries in web search results. But the truth is that the real numbers are likely higher as Americans rely on it more and more without even realizing it.
Because AI is great at weights and measures. It’s designed to answer questions, solve problems, automate systems, create workflows, streamline processes, and generate content.
But what AI still can’t do well is understand and truly relate to the emotional and mental experience of being human.
And this is where any reliance fully on AI in dating might be sabotaging your efforts to find a romantic partner.
How AI is already affecting your dating life
If you are using any of the mainstream dating apps or sites, congratulations, AI is officially the third wheel you didn’t know was there.
And at first glance, it doesn’t seem too intrusive. But the deeper you look into AI and dating, the more concerning it becomes.
Here are seven ways you may encounter AI in your dating life that deserve a closer look.
AI embedded in traditional dating apps and sites like Match, Tinder, and Bumble
Almost all dating platforms use AI to some degree. There is the invisible AI that works in the background and may support matching algorithms, security, detecting fake accounts, bots, spam and scams, flagging harassment, explicit images, and inappropriate language, to name a few.
Then there is the visible generative AI that the client interacts with. This may include profile feedback, conversation prompts, image evaluation, and photo selections. Depending on the platform you use, it may be involved in profile feedback, photo selection, scam detection, conversation prompts, and matchmaking, to name a few.
Who knows, at the speed that AI is integrating into our lives, it may be involved in a dozen more aspects of basic online dating by the time this article is published.AI-first matchmaking services, like Stitch, Known, Fate, and Keeper
These are platforms built around AI matchmaking, rather than the browsing and swiping of conventional apps. AI is the primary means of getting to know members, evaluating compatibility, and choosing whom they should take the time to meet.Stand-alone AI dating tools or “dating copilots”, like Rizz, YourMove AI, and ROAST
These aren’t dating platforms but tools that help singles navigate dating elsewhere. Some aspects of their services seem harmless, like writing or improving a dating profile, weighing in on the best profile images, planning and preparing dates, or providing conversation starters.
Where these services become questionable is how they provide language and personality assistance. That’s right, they help the client sound better, usually before meeting a match, and do everything from teaching how to flirt better to taking over a conversation completely.
In recent years, I’ve heard stories from many clients about having great, eloquent, charming conversations with a match, but when they finally met face to face, their date’s personality and language were nothing like who they interacted with online. The other person feels bamboozled.General-purpose AI assistants used for dating, like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini
These are some of the most common AI tools on the market, useful for work, business, home, and, at their most basic function, work like a super web browser.
So while these free-to-try public chatbots aren’t specifically dating products, they can perform many of the same support functions when prompted, including profile writing and correspondence help, organizing your dating system, planning dates, working with you to evaluate matches or dates, creating AI-generated profile photos, and the list goes on.
At first glance, none of this seems too terrible. However, AI’s ability to be whatever you want it to be means it can move into morally grey areas. It doesn’t sound like you, and if it may leave out important things that you don’t tell it that a potential match would like to hear.AI relationship-support tools
These AI dating tools are less well-known. They offer relationship advice, intimacy advice, communication exercises, conflict analysis & mediation, emotional check-ins, and even personalized coaching.
One problem with these types of AI apps (and all AI for that matter) is that they are biased towards you. Programmed to meet needs and provide answers, they want to please. That might sound good at first; however, in doing so, AI will tell you what it thinks you want to hear, often ignoring your instructions and/or any facts or data that might be contrary, generic, or not really pertaining to your situation.
They have even been shown to lead people down dangerous or destructive paths in order to “please” and keep users engaged.AI companion apps and simulated romantic partners
These AI services are exactly as they sound. You can create your own customizable AI partner. Some platforms even have visible AI avatars that you can alter to whatever appearance you prefer.
To me, this feels dangerous. Not only are you engaging emotionally with a program that can’t genuinely feel anything, but you’re paying a service to do so. The designers of these services use smart triggers to emotionally manipulate you into staying in the app for as long as possible. More engagement means more money for them.
But the biggest problem is that you are making yourself emotionally available and often dependent on something that has no true ability to care or connect.AI-enabled deception, fraud, and manipulation
AI has made crime easier than ever for criminals and scammers. The FBI specifically warned in 2026 that romance scammers are using AI-generated images, videos, and voices to make fake identities more believable.
When dating or even just meeting someone new online, remember these safety precautions.- Stay cautious and take some time before you meet someone in person. Even if it feels real, scammers are professionals who’re very good at emotional manipulation.
- Always keep correspondence within the dating app or until you have met in person, and you can confirm you want to keep seeing this person.
- No second location! Scammers, especially international ones, love to use WhatsApp to get their victims outside of the dating app’s built-in safety features.
- Finally, never give out personal details like your phone number, home address, mother’s maiden name, etc. until you have established an in-person relationship. And NEVER give out financial information (like banking and credit card numbers) until you are ready to co-mingle your banking accounts.
- Stay cautious and take some time before you meet someone in person. Even if it feels real, scammers are professionals who’re very good at emotional manipulation.
When used wisely, AI can be useful to strengthen your dating life, but it can also sabotage your pursuit of True Love.
AI can be a useful assistant to perform simple tasks such as researching date ideas, suggesting conversation starters, proofreading profiles, and editing something you’ve already written. It is more intuitive than a web browser, so it feels more natural when looking things up.
The challenge is that AI doesn’t know you.
Sure, it knows about you, but only based on what you tell it and what it learns about your habits and preferences as you work with it.
But actually understanding someone isn’t accomplished through description and data points. It is found through time, vulnerability, trust, curiosity, and the emotional intangibles that must be experienced to form connection.
AI can’t understand your childhood, your upbringing, how love was modeled, how you experienced love, your blessings and your traumas, your unspoken motivation, your secret fears, your relationship successes and failures…
It can’t understand why something is attractive or sexy to you. It can’t discern why something turns you off or gives you the creeps. Half the time, we barely understand all these things about ourselves.
AI won’t be able to fully comprehend how you feel loved or how you offer love. It won’t be able to understand why, between two matches, people with nearly identical profiles, one is an immediate no for you and the other has potential.
True relationship, true connection is an emotional process that must be experienced.
I hope, in a few years, I’ll have the privilege of updating this article to say that AI is a safe space, with better federal regulations and accountability. But as of right now, I can only urge caution.
If you’re seriously searching for true love, don’t outsource your dating to AI. You can’t avoid it completely; AI is here to stay.
