Dating in a Tough Economy – Online Dating: An Affordable Option

23 January 2009

Where can you go to meet qualified people to date- without having to get dressed up, spend the metro fare or gas money to get to the event until you qualify the person as someone you’d like to meet in person?  The answer is online dating!  Online dating is a great option for meeting marriage-minded people to date.

How much money do you spend getting yourself dolled up, getting yourself to the event, parking your care, paying the event fee and paying for a drink or two at the cash bar?  And, you still don’t meet anyone to date?  And, if you meet someone, you need to spend weeks figuring out if this person is truly interested in a serious love relationship.  What if you took that money and put it into online dating?

Many of my clients have had success at meeting their mates online.   These are very high quality individuals who are very busy in their personal and professional lives.  A targeted online strategy works best for most people.

It’s an interesting fact that when the economy takes a dip, the online sites get very busy.  In a LA Times article notes that “virtual matchmakers have had their best traffic in years.”  Not only the free sites like Craigslist, but also paid subscription sites like Match.com and eHaromony.com have seen their traffic increase 20% increases in 2008. It only goes to show that in stressful times, people seek serious relationships.

What does that mean for you?  My dating advice is to get on that bandwagon and see who is out there looking for a serious love relationship.  If you don’t try, you will never know.  Of course you need to know how to best present yourself so that you attract the right people to you.  You’ll also need to decide who you are looking for so you can weed out inappropriate people upfront.

It doesn’t mean you should avoid going out all together to events and activities.  However, online dating should be a major part of your overall dating strategic plan.  January is a great time to get started.  Many people are participating in online dating as part of their New Year Resolution to find a serious relationship.

What are your plans for online dating this year?    Which sites appeal to you?
