Some things \u201cjust are,\u201d right? College, jobs, travel, a major breakup or two \u2013 and somehow you look at the calendar and realize you\u2019ve been alone a long time. You may not even have noticed how quickly the years have passed because you are so comfortable alone. And that status quo begs the question: <em>Is this how you want your life to look?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong. Flying solo isn\u2019t all bad. For anyone who is married, let alone with children, \u201cme time\u201d is a coveted commodity that <em>needs<\/em> to be planned and honored.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/motivatedtomarry.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2021-September-25-message.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3208 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/motivatedtomarry.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2021-September-25-message.jpg\" alt=\"Man eating a pizza alone and taking a selfie.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even for the living-alone single, life in selfie mode has its advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>peace and quiet<\/li>\n<li>the toilet seat where you want it<\/li>\n<li>a good night&#8217;s sleep<\/li>\n<li>your schedule as you want it to be<\/li>\n<li>doing the activities you want to do when you want to do them<\/li>\n<li>an organized or messy house \u2013 your choice!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s not to love? Your life your way, no hassles, no arguments. Besides, don\u2019t all the relationship gurus insist that you need to be comfortable alone before you can be healthy together?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, of course.<\/p>\n<h2><em>However, <\/em>if you\u2019re over 30 and still alone (not simply single, but avoiding or not pursuing a relationship), you may be missing out. You may have become <em>so <\/em>comfortable being alone that the perks of togetherness may not even dawn on you.<\/h2>\n<p>Consider having:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consistent companionship<\/li>\n<li>a dinner buddy<\/li>\n<li>a travel companion<\/li>\n<li>an activity buddy<\/li>\n<li>physical intimacy<\/li>\n<li>a helpmate<\/li>\n<li>dividing up the chores<\/li>\n<li>someone to spend the holidays with<\/li>\n<li>a confidant<\/li>\n<li>a plus-one for events and special occasions<\/li>\n<li>emotional support when you need it<\/li>\n<li>someone with whom to grow old<\/li>\n<li>planning and creating a family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve got other thoughts you can add to both lists.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is: <em>Being in a relationship requires a conscious choice. And, like any important decision, it shouldn&#8217;t be taken lightly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Relationships challenge us and reflect who we are. Having to accommodate another teaches us humility and adaptability.<\/p>\n<p>My clients&#8217; lives change when they become part of a couple.<\/p>\n<h3>Some of the changes clients have made include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>moving out of state<\/li>\n<li>selling their homes to move in with their partners<\/li>\n<li>gaining children to love in a blended family<\/li>\n<li>becoming parents to their own children<\/li>\n<li>enjoying relationships with adult children<\/li>\n<li>becoming part of a tight-knit family<\/li>\n<li>traveling to exotic places<\/li>\n<li>accepting invitations to vacation homes<\/li>\n<li>gaining a business partner<\/li>\n<li>reconnecting with an old friend<\/li>\n<li>elevating their standard of living by combining their incomes and energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This list goes on, of course. But hopefully, you\u2019re taking pause to consider what you\u2019re trading in order to remain solo.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Being part of a couple adds a whole new dimension to your life. It really is the meaning of \u201cthe whole being greater than the sum of its parts.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the pandemic caused you to begin thinking about whether or not you truly want to be alone. For many singles, the social distancing provided greater clarity about what they truly want for their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Some decided they do enjoy being alone.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of US households are single households. So, if the pandemic helped you recognize that you truly are comfortable alone, you have company!
