Today is the ten year anniversary of 9-11.\u00a0\u00a0 What can I tell you about that day, experience and the impact on my life?\u00a0\u00a0 It showed me that I could depend on Alan in case of a major emergency.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that what you want from a marriage minded life partner?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
I woke up and checked out of the Manhattan Club hotel and ready to have a full and productive buying day for my Bethesda boutique.\u00a0 I normally check my luggage at the luggage check at Penn Station, NY.\u00a0 That way, I can grab my luggage and catch a cab for the airport.\u00a0 For some reason I decided to keep it at the hotel check for the day.\u00a0 That turned out to be a smart move.<\/p>\n
I then decided to walk to the Garment district.\u00a0 It was a beautiful day.\u00a0 It was sunny and in the high 70\u2019s.\u00a0 As I walked through Time Square in the early morning I saw a disturbing thing on the Time Square screen \u2013 it was what looked like a bombing of one of the Twin Towers.\u00a0 I saw smoke and said to myself, \u201cOh no, they bombed the Twin Tower again!\u201d What I didn\u2019t see is the rest of that horrible incident of the Towers falling.\u00a0 Later, that view would be etched into my memory of that day.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I arrived at my first appointment.\u00a0 \u201cDid you hear what happened?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo\u201d, I replied.\u00a0 One of the Twin Towers has collapsed\u2019, said the merchandise representative.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t have a TV but turned on the radio.\u00a0 I was in disbelief.\u00a0 This couldn\u2019t be happening!\u00a0 As a task oriented business owner who only had a day to do her work to support her business (I was a single business owner where the store was everything to me) I was kind of annoyed by the disruption.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t yet grasped the gravity of this day.\u00a0 People were calling their family members and checking on their kids at school. \u00a0People were trying to figure out how to get home to their loved ones.<\/p>\n
\u00a0I trudged onto my next appointment.\u00a0 I got to the next showroom.\u00a0 \u201cDid you hear what happened?\u201d, said the rep, \u201cThe second twin tower went down too!\u201d \u201cThis has to be a hoax or something\u201d I thought.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019d better call someone\u201d, she recommended.\u00a0 I called Alan and told him that I was alright.\u00a0 My mom was in London.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how to get to her.\u00a0 \u201cThey cancelled all the flights and trains today leaving New York City\u201d.\u00a0 Great!\u00a0 I needed to get home and had planned to fly home that evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Late morning I was at another showroom.\u00a0 I realized I was not going to get home tonight and had to find a place to stay.\u00a0 I called the Manhattan Club.\u00a0 \u201cSorry we are full tonight\u201d.\u00a0 I heard the only hotel room was in Edison, NJ.\u00a0 There were no cabs since those who left New York could not come back (People were paying cabs $500 to take them home!).\u00a0 They closed off the bridges.\u00a0 Fortunately, one of the Reps was a single gal and she said I could stay with her that evening in her apartment.\u00a0 I was relieved.\u00a0 I was able to use her computer to email my Mother to tell her I was okay.\u00a0 The cell towers went down and I got a phone call to Alan to tell him I was okay.\u00a0 Alan was going to call my friend Margie to have her feed my cat an extra day.\u00a0 Also, I was having trouble calling Amtrack and getting through.\u00a0 It looked like the train was what I had to take to get home the next day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0I walked up 7th<\/sup> Avenue back to the Manhattan Club to get my luggage.\u00a0 If I had left it at Penn Station, they would not have let me in to get it.\u00a0 The walk uptown was surreal.\u00a0 When I passed through Times Square there was a calm and quiet.\u00a0 There were very few cars or cabs.\u00a0 I ended up buying a small radio with ear plugs so I could know what was going on at one of many of the electronic stores in Times Square.\u00a0<\/p>\n I arrived at my friend\u2019s apartment.\u00a0 She had her sister there with her.\u00a0 She was generous and let me use the computer to get in touch with Alan to keep him updated.\u00a0 The phone circuits were all busy.\u00a0 There was a feeling that we were all in this together.\u00a0\u00a0 We went for a jog in Central Park together that afternoon.\u00a0 Everyone was out in this picture perfect day but just in a somber mood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n We went to an area restaurant for dinner and saw on the TV the president\u2019s message.\u00a0 I found out that the Pentagon was a target too!\u00a0 My friend Gary worked there.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0My car was at the airport so when I came in from the train, I needed to be get back to the airport to pick it up.\u00a0 Alan said he would pick me up at Union Station in DC.\u00a0 I just need to give him the time.\u00a0 \u00a0What I realized was that he was the kind of guy that I could depend on in times of emergency.\u00a0\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that what marriage is all about?\u00a0 Being there for each other in good times and bad?\u00a0 Having that someone be your support person.\u00a0\u00a0 This experience made me feel closer to Alan and moved us towards seriously thinking about the possibility of marriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0If you are in a relationship, has there been any family or personal emergencies that have tested the strength of your relationship?\u00a0 Do you know if that person will be there for you in stressful times?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And how can you tell if your partner deals head on with adversity or runs away from it?\u00a0\u00a0 In my first marriage, this was never tested so I didn\u2019t know that my ex had trouble dealing with the tough stuff!\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0The story continues\u2026..<\/p>\n \u00a0Intentionally yours,<\/p>\n \u00a0Coach Amy<\/p>\n \u00a0PS.\u00a0 If you live in the DC area and you are marriage minded, join my Meetup Group at http:\/\/budurl.com\/DCMMGroup<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Meet other marriage minded singles for friendship and dating!\u00a0 \u00a0We have a meetup scheduled for 9\/22 in Rockville, MD.\u00a0 For those outside of the DC area, sign up on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com\/marriagemindedsinglesdeclared<\/a> Get Your free copy of my Motivated to Marry e-book there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Today is the ten year anniversary of 9-11.
