In our March tele-gathering the theme was how to avoid mistakes when dating online. I had an all female group this month. Much of the conversation focused on what they saw in the men’s profiles and how that formed an opinion of the guys they were looking at. How you fill out your profile reflects several things about you and here is the group’s dating advice:

1. How you fill out your profile
Do you take the time to fill out the profile completely? If you don’t fill it out completely, it speaks about how seriously someone is taking this venture. Moreover, you may be thinking by seeing an incomplete profile, “What is this person hiding?” It conveys that this person has not really “shown up” and may be online dating as a whim.By taking care of how you fill out the profile and what you say, it shows your level of commitment to the online dating process. When you fill out the online dating profile thoroughly, it makes many women be more comfortable to contact you –since you appear to want to meet someone for a serious relationship.

2. About your education and writing skills
When you write in full sentences, use correct grammar and punctuation it shows that you can write, you are educated and have communication skills. I know, we live in the world of text messages and short-hand! However, by taking the time to write correctly it shows that you care how you come across. It also conveys you are diligent and did take the time to polish your writing of your profile. By crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s, you appear to be a more desirable prospect.

3. About your picture
If you put any old picture up it says you were probably drunk when you signed up for the online dating service! If you put up a business photo of you in a suit that you may have taken for an annual report or business card (realtors do!), you are showing your more formal side-but not necessarily a good photo for your online dating profile. My online dating advice is to have an attractive dressy-casual photo that shows your warm and open side of your personality. We all have heard that “a picture says a thousand words”…. So why anyone would put one of their face scowling or one that is not focusing on their best features? Again, by taking thoughtful photos you are putting your best foot forward. You wouldn’t show up on a date not dressed properly (and without some makeup for most women)!

If you show that you are serious about this endeavor, and take the time to fill out your online dating profile with care, that says volumes about you. By showing your sincere intent to meet a serious love relationship, you will attract the right kind of men or women to your online dating profile

What is important to you when you read someone’s online dating profile?
